Lu Yan lived, ate and slept Wushu for 16 years at the home of Beijing Wushu,
Shichahai. She was first selected to train in China’s National Sport when she
was only 8 years old, being chosen by Li Junfeng from the local schools to join
his Wushu classes.
During her early years the training was rigorous – Li Junfeng and Wu Bin are
notorious for their strenuous training regimes, pushing their students right to
the edge of their endurance. This is what made the athletes of this era the
National Champions that they became, the Beijing Wushu Team being the National
Team Champions for 10 years in a row.

The Early Years
Whilst Wushu was a recognised sport in China, it was still relatively unknown in
the Western world. In 1974 Lu Yan was chosen by the Chinese Wushu Delegation to
go to America for the first Wushu tour. Along with a young Li Lianjie she
performed for President Nixon on the White House lawns.

Competitions and the 4th, 5th and 6th All China Games between 1977 and 1987. In
her 10 year competitive career she took over 40 medals, also becoming a National
Champion in Jian, San Jie Gun and Dui Lian. She is also a ‘Wu Ying’, a title
bestowed upon only the very best Wushu practitioners.

During her Wushu career, Lu Yan has been privileged to have been taught by some
of the great Wushu Masters. It was this instruction, and her own determined
efforts that made her the well rounded martial artist that she is today.
