This period of history was still a turbulent time for China. Relations between
China and America were only just beginning to be forged. In September of 1973 Lu
Yan was selected to join the Chinese Wushu Delegation who were to go to America
to promote friendship between the two great nations. She would become an
ambassador for her country at the age of only 10.
So
in early September over a hundred selected Wushu performers were brought in to
Beijing from all over China. These chosen elite were to all live together during
the selection period.
As the months passed, athletes were rejected until only a select few were left.
These remaining 30 or so athletes were chosen to participate in the first Wushu
tour to go to North America in June of 1974.
The Delegation first went to Mexico and then the US, performing in Hawaii, San
Francisco, New York and finally Washington. In Washington, Lu Yan had the great
honour of going to the White House. She presented flowers to President Nixon and
then performed Chang Quan on the White House lawns. This was a remarkable day
for a remarkable young girl.
Returning home to China in July there were more surprises in store for the 10
year old.
